International Christian Poet Laureate 2010–2012
In March 2010 Utmost Christian Writers Foundation selected its third International Christian Poet Laureate, Marianne Jones, of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. She was chosen from a slate of six candidates who submitted applications according to strict criteria.
Marianne's term as Poet Laureate began March 1, 2010 and will continue until February 28, 2012. She will be officially inaugurated by a proclamation at the Gathering of Christian Poets in Edmonton on April 10, 2010. In addition to receiving a trophy, Marianne also receives an annual cash honorarium of $200 for each year of her term.
Marianne's accomplishments in poetry date back to 1987, when she first sold a poem for publication. Since then her poems have appeared in about 16 different journals, some denominational and some literary. She has been awarded for her excellence in poetry by a number of contests including Northern Ontario Poetry Competition, Northwestern Ontario Writers Workshop, Writer's Digest Poetry Competition, InScribe Writing Contest and Utmost Christian Writers Poetry Contest.
Marianne's self-published chapbook, Highway 17, was included on the creative writing curriculum at Confederation College in Thunder Bay. More recently, a larger collection, "Here on the Ground," was completed with the assistance of the Ontario Arts Council.
Marianne Jones is an "enthusiastic follower and servant of Jesus." Quoting from her application, "…I know I have been called to write and given a gift for the glory of God, and as that line in 'Chariots of Fire' goes, 'I feel His pleasure' when I write.
During her two year term as Poet Laureate, Utmost Christian Writers will endeavor to work with Marianne and encourage her to develop and realize a poetry project of significance. This is in line with Utmost's mandate "to encourage and support poets of Christian faith."
