For My Mother

Carnations:
where did the practice come from?
Is it white for life, red for death?
Or red for life, white for death?
Confusion.
And I brought home to my mother
…the wrong one.
I could tell by the subtle frown
beneath her smiled "Thank you"
A child honoring her mother
on Mother's Day
with the advent, a reminder
of her mortality.
