Mother's Day
About this Christian Poet:
I am an 86 year old World War II veteran, now retired. My 401st Bomb Group crew and I flew 25 missions over Germany. I began writing poetry about 3 years ago when I composed a poem for a stewardship campaign at our church. The music director liked it so much he wrote music for it and it has been performed as a hymn in the church. My wife and I are usually at the breakfast table by 6:30AM. It is during the quiet time following breakfast that I do most of my poetry composition. Once the idea strikes me and I find a good beginning line or two that seems to have some metric quality and perhaps even rhymes, then I'm off to the races. I try to write one poem every week and sometimes manage more.
There's something all of us must have, no matter who we are;
Kings and Queens and Presidents and every movie star.
Even Jesus, Lord of Lords, the Son of God you know
Had this same thing—that we all have—which God Himself bestows!
I know by now you know for sure what I am speaking of;
The greatest gift God gives to us that comes with all His love.
Thank You, God, for my dear Mom; without her I wouldn't be
Fashioned from her flesh and blood to join the family tree!
Except for Mothers none really know exactly what's involved,
To spend a full nine months until a birthing is resolved.
That's why they're a special group which has a lovely way
Of accepting all our love and thanks that comes on Mother's Day!
A Mother is the first hero that every child will know.
She's there to help with our first steps—we put on quite a show.
While she continues teaching us, she becomes our first best friend
And keeps us out of trouble—she guides through thick and thin!
Mother's Day, a special day, the one we set aside
To honor every Mother and our own with lots of pride.
Whether she is still alive or with God in the sky,
We honor her with all our love until the day we die!
Jesus' Mother was there with Him as He hung on the cross.
She knew that He was special but His death was such a loss.
I'm sure that she is now with Him receiving tender care,
And she is there to welcome home, Mothers from everywhere!
