Phyllis Woods

First Prize Rhyming: 2016 Utmost Christian Poetry Contest $300

About this Poet:
I am a former high school english teacher and I currently serve as an elder at Winter Park Presbyterian Church. I also serve as a prayer partner at Holy Land Experience, a biblical theme park in Orlando. I have been married for 46 years to Alan Woods and have a stepson, 3 daughters and almost 9 grandchildren (a new one due in August). My greatest joys in life are moderating Bible studies, spending time with my family, writing, drawing, and dancing.

About this Poem:
I wrote this poem to express my gratitude to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for the great gift of His salvation. All that is beautiful in my life is from Him— He is the light and the love of my life, and He is Lord over all.

Saving Arms that Rescue Me

In the midst of hurt and hardship
Troubled times we can't foresee
There's a place of calm and solace
Saving arms that rescue me
Though wild winds blow dreams asunder
Conflict rise and friendships flee
Though the darkness gathers fury
Still, my Lord, you rescue me.

Though the storms of life assail me
Lone and hurting though I be
Still you call me to your refuge
To a place prepared for me
You surround me with your caring
Undeserving though I be
Scarred and bruised by my own failings
Still, my Lord, you rescue me.

Ever faithful, Oh my Savior
Giving grace, so pure and free
My defense, my strong protector
Christ the Lord, you rescue me
Let my song rise up before you
Precious King, my liberty
In your love, I'll stay forever
Saving arms that rescue me.
