Sean Gunning

First Prize Rhyming: 2012 Utmost Christian Poetry Contest $300

About this Poet:
Sean discovered how to hear the weight of a poem’s waves somewhat late in life. He is indebted to Long Beach luminaries Frank Gaspar, Charles Webb, Patty Seyburn and Bill Mohr for guiding this discovery. He has been published in various literary magazines, including Serving House Journal, Moon Tide Press and Long Beach, California—Past, Present & Future: The Anthology to name just a few. Sean’s poem, “Waiting for Snow to Fall,” won the 2008 Real New Music Poetry Contest, and he was a 2012 contest finalist with Atlanta Review. His debut collection of verse, No Samaritan, is scheduled for publication with Tebot Bach Press in fall 2013. Born and raised in London by Irish parents, he moved to Long Beach, CA in 1989 to marry an American girl called Reggie and has lived in the bliss of her radiance and withering glare ever since.

And has that moment long ago
Flown from your mind; it has not mine.
And did your throat run wet or dry
The hour before you gave the sign?

And has your kiss upon my cheek
An age since left your trembling lips?
And from this cup did not our God
With love design for us to sip?

Bring me thy silver-coined embrace!
Bring me thy lips’ betraying deed!
Bring me thy heart’s repentful grace!
Bring me thy love on wings of speed!

I will not fail to shine for thee
A light toward forgiving sleep,
Till all who lose their way return;
In this belief, your kiss I keep.
