Charles Van Gorkom

Honorable Mention: 2010 Novice Christian Poetry Contest $100

About this Christian Poet:
Charles Van Gorkom is a bootmaker poet, in both leather and word, who has lived for the last forty years by a river in Northern British Columbia, Canada. His life verse is I Thessalonians 4:11-12 from the New Testament: "And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing."

Simple Faith

There is a faith so simple
a slab of leather
may be lifted down,
as in a dusty library
one lifts down a precious
one hundred year old volume,
unlay the buttery golden folds,
cut and stitch by hand,
by lamplight if one must,
until a radiant pair of boots
fairly leaps from the bench alive,
eager to rush headlong out
to bless a barefoot world.
