This poem was inspired by a photograph of the blue-grape hyacinths as they pushed upward through the earth early last spring.
The Third Day
Weather Report from Underground
It was one of those belligerent days again today.
Soil quality: Firm. Outlook: Natural glass.
Until then, I’m a little fonder.
Boxes
I pull at : muscles you rehearse
plays the part : my abdomen
This is what I’ve learned from corners:
there aren’t so many of them
and how they’re thin, like blue cerulean.
And how the lines,
they’re thirsty, honest
drinking in.
Sky
You repeat in me, like I repeat in You—
beginning here, with this pair of eyes.
Eyes? you ask. Why yes, like mine:
wide like the myth
blue clay livid
deep like the pool
The Sea that changes.
And there was evening, and there was morning—a third day.
