As Fresh as Heaven Fair

Chains of stains and ropes of want bind up this life of mine.
Ashamed I stand, but Christ’s dear hand still holds out hope sublime.
I blush to look into the face of God’s own precious Son,
for there I see His love for me, this wandering, wayward one.

I bow and fall before the feet of Him Who gave His life.
He bids me touch the scars I see that speak of such a price.
“Oh, gracious Lord, I am unclean, a foul and filthy man!
I cannot comprehend such Love that births salvation’s plan.”

“I surely cannot stay so near, oh holy, righteous King.
Such perfect wholeness shall consume this wretched heart I bring.”
Yet still Christ draws me to Himself, to His heart’s perfect peace,
and as I rest upon His breast, my frantic fears now cease.

Breezes, fresh as Heaven fair, caress my fevered brow.
“Sleep, Child, sleep,” my Savior says, “rest here beside Me now.”
Sweet peace, sweet stillness in His care, oh such a treasured bliss!
His healing soothes me deep within. What wonderment is this!

All falls away. The heavy load of sinful thoughts and deeds
recede into the distant dark. I have all that I need.
My Savior loves me, this I know. Forgiven, now I am.
And I shall live forevermore safe in His Holy hands.

Oh, Hallelujah to the King, Whose love no limits keep!
He reaches far into the night, retrieves me from the deep!
Oh, Hallelujah to the King, Who on the Cross did bear
my every sin. He makes my heart as fresh as Heaven fair!
